What are electronic drum pads?
They are one of the main components of an electronic drum set. Like normal drums, they work by being struck with sticks. Unlike normal drums, an electronic drum pad creates sound not through sound waves but by converting the vibrations into electric signals that goes into the module. The electronic drum modules then read the signals and assign a sound to them, according to the settings adjusted by the user. The sound can be heard through the output (speakers, headphones, etc.). That is how an electronic drum set can electronically imitate the sounds usually generated by acoustic drums.
What do you want them for?
There are many reasons to buy electronic drums. You might use it over acoustic drums for the wider range of sounds that it can produce. An acoustic drum set can only create the type of music that it was built for, while electronic drums can be configured to play any style of music, letting the drummer shift easily between songs.
Another reason you might want to buy electronic drums is because of its ease of use in recording. While acoustic drums require several expensive microphones and expert placement skills to be recorded, electronic drums can be easily recorded by directly connecting the module into your mixer.
Maybe you live in a neighborhood that can’t appreciate the sounds of your drums banging off to the music. You can connect headphones into your set and practice all you want without having to worry about that grumpy old lady next door scolding you.
Different features While there’s already a lot that can be done with electronic drum sets, there’s actually more than what has already been discussed. An electronic drum pad may be designed to have unique special features. To mimic the properties of normal drums, the pads create different sounds when struck with different velocities. But some pads can even generate different sounds depending on the where it is hit. Striking in the middle will give a different sound from striking near the edges of the drum. Some realistic electronic hi-hats with a foot switch can produce “closed”, “opened”, and even “half-closed” sounds. While an electronic bass drum can be made by using an ordinary electronic pad with a normal pedal that can be used for acoustic drum sets, there are also electronic pedals that automatically produce bass drum sounds when stepped on.
