Electronic Drums for the Little Drummer Boy…or Girl

By: Melissa Domotor

Kids today are more focused on computer games, with all those new consoles coming out of the woodwork every so often. It’s a good thing, though, that there are electronic games that are related to music, such as the game Guitar Hero. But a child’s introduction to music should not be relegated to console games alone. Buying your kid a drum set is a great way to introduce him to the joys of playing music. There are cute little drum sets available for children ages 3 – 12 years old, the years that a child needs to begin practicing their musical skills to develop their potential. For this purpose, an electronic set is ideal for your kid.

Worried about the drum noise? One important advantage in giving electronic drum set to your kid to practice with is that it allows for a quieter playing. There’s a little chance that your kid’s banging will wake the whole neighborhood up since electronic drum sets do not really produce acoustic drum sounds. Simply hook up the kit to a speaker, or better yet a headset, so that any noise would be minimized. Your child then can bang the drum to his heart’s content.

There’s another feature that your kid might enjoy with an electronic drum set. Electronic drums can do some other things that a regular drum set can't. Electronic drum sets can create really strange but cool sounds. With the strike on a drum pad, it can make practically any percussion sound you like. It can also reproduce the sound of a guitar, bass horns, keyboards and vocals. It can also mimic a dog bark, door slam or even burps. This ability to recreate multiple sounds and control the volume is just one of the features that make children’s electronic drums so popular. Other things that you can do with electronic drums are altering the pitch and adding reverb or echo effects.

Childrens electronic drums are available wherever electronic drums for adults are sold. Pintech,Yamaha and Roland are three of the top brands you may choose from. There are inexpensive kits that are available in the market today. Drum sets for beginners are readily available at a cheap price so it is advisable to start with a beginner’s kit and transfer to a set for professional as your kid improves his skills. Compare electronic drums to see which ones are more comfortable to play with and which ones offer more features.
